In this blog post, we will examine Acts 2, otherwise known
as Pentecost. In John 14, Jesus
promised to give his disciples a helper, the Holy Spirit. Many believed that after Jesus died, the
Holy Spirit came. However, there are
many scripture references to the Holy Spirit as far back as the first chapter
of Genesis. However, Pentecost is a
very important event in scripture that must be looked at.
“When the day of
Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a
violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were
sitting. They saw what seemed to be
tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in other tongues as the spirit enabled them.”
Acts 2:1-4.
The difference? The
Holy Spirit now lives inside of us.
Once someone accepts Jesus into their hearts, the Spirit of God will
dwell inside of them.
“ Do you not know that
your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received
from God? You are not your own: You were
bought at a price. Therefore honor God
with your body.” 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20
Roles of the Holy Spirit
The Spirit gives us spiritual gifts, or God given abilities
for service.
“There are different
kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different types of working, but the
same God works all of them in all men.”
1 Corinthians 12:4-6
The Spirit helps to identify Christians by their fruit
”But the fruit of the
Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control.”
Galatians 5:22-23.
The Holy Spirit confirms that we belong to the Lord
“For you did not
receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the
Spirit of son-ship and by him we cry ‘Abba, Father.’
Romans 8:15
The Holy Spirit helps with prayer
“In the same way, the
Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do
not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
with groans that words cannot express.
And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the
Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.”
Romans 8:26-27.
The Holy Spirit grieves sin
“Do not grieve the
Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
Ephesians 5:30
He will Convict us to ask for forgiveness
“If we confess our
sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us form
all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9
The Holy Spirit is a confusing topic. I hope I was able to
teach you something new.
