Yoke

As Christians, we can date and marry whoever we like.  GOD has one rule: They must be Christians.

“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.  For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?  What harmony is there between Christ and Belial?  What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?”
~ 2 Corinthians 6:14-15.

When I was new to the faith, I thought Yoke was in reference to the Yoke of an egg.  Now that I am older, I know better.  Yoke refers to the wooden harness that is worn by a team of Oxen to plow a field.    A pair of oxen thus become a team and work together to get the job done.

When you get married you become a “team” with the person you marry.  You work off of each other’s strengths and overcome each other’s weaknesses.   “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work.”   A pair of oxen are a team.  A husband and a wife are a team.

A good farmer knows that you would not pair a healthy ox to a sick ox because it would cause the healthy ox to do twice as much work and would possibly make the healthy ox sick.   You would use a yolk to tie two healthy oxen together to get the best return for their work.

As Christians we are required to marry Christians.   We are spiritually healthy and we need to be yoked together with someone who is spiritually healthy as well.   If we compromise and marry someone who is not a Christian we risk having a very unhealthy marriage.   Yes, yes.. I know the verse about being a good witness to an unbelieving spouse but that does not apply to single people searching for a spouse that verse is written for people who become Christians AFTER they are married.

I am writing to all my friends who are single and Christian and looking for “the one”.  Please do not compromise on this one rule GOD has given us when choosing a spouse.  Trust in the LORD and he will bring you a guy worth waiting for.
